Five Hundred – Launching this week!

It’s been a few hundred hours of work, a whole lot of testing, a huge amount of reading of the Steamworks API – but Five Hundred – Steam Edition – is coming this week!

As previously discussed, the Steam Edition includes a very large amount of new features. Some of the major ones:

  • Improved Artificial Intelligence
  • Licenced music
  • Multiplayer modes (2-4 players, any combination of teams)
  • Animated backgrounds
  • Tutorial prompts
  • Misere bids
  • Redesigned preferences interface
  • More game options and quality-of-life effects
  • Refined user interface in several places
  • Improved performance on very low-spec systems
  • Steam Achievements
  • Steam Leaderboards and statistics tracking
  • More cardsets, cardbacks, and tables
  • Many, many, many bugfixes

All for the low, low price of about $2.50USD (or equivalent in various currencies)!

Five Hundred on Steam

Because it didn’t feel right to just leave the old freeware version back at the 2015 release forever, I’ve updated the parts of the old codebase that I could, and have made this available as “V1.90 Sunset Edition”. It is missing a few features compared to the Steam edition, specifically:

  • No Steam Achievements or Leaderboards
  • No Music
  • Less statistics tracking
  • No Multiplayer mode (500 multiplayer needs Steam’s Networking API)
  • No animated backdrops

I would really, really appreciate it if people who enjoy Five Hundred play via the Steam Edition – it provides a lot of additional functionality, auto-updating, better feature support, and maybe (over time) will allow me to recoup some of the licencing costs for the tools I used to make it! That said, the Freeware version will remain available (if not updated in future).
